Android is world’s most popular mobile operating system for smartphones and tablets. Unlike iOS, The biggest advantage of Android is that it is an open-source project. This allows developers around all over the world to build customized version of Android namely Custom ROMs for Android.
If you want to use your smartphone for years, you will likely get reliable and up-to-date Android only with Custom ROMs . They also give you the opportunity to explore brand new designs and UIs, and offer impressive features. A custom Rom is a firmware based on the Android source code provided by Google. Custom ROMs are also prefered as they are generally bloatware free and provide heavy customizations.
You’ll require a Custom Recovery such as TWRP for flashing a Custom Rom. If you do not have one, install a Custom Recovery on your device with the help of this guide- How To Install TWRP Recovery On Your Android Phone.
There are a lot of Custom Roms for Android to choose from, with each Rom to offer something different from other, we are here to tell you to which Rom to go with.
1. Lineage OS
LineageOS is the successor to by far the most popular custom ROM, CyanogenMod ROM. Built using Google’s AOSP code as it’s base and with their own added custom code to it, LOS also works as the source code for many other custom ROMs. With an emphasis on openness, community development, and improvement of the stock Android experience, CyanogenMod supported dozens of devices officially with nightly updates, and unofficially, by the efforts of developers in the community, dozens more devices. LOS has a compact launcher, a feature-packed camera app and few selected pre-installed apps which leaves you with a lot of free memory.
2. Pixel Experience
If the Google Pixel 3 and 3 XL are a bit too expensive for you, but you love their aesthetic, Pixel Experience is the right choice for you. This custom AOSP ROM will transform your phone into a pure Google device, with all the Pixel features included – launcher, icons, fonts, widgets etc. Pixel Experiece ROM offers a very little amount of customization as it is very close to a pure AOSP rom. But regardless of that, It is undoubtedly one of the best custom rom out there.
3. Resurrection Remix
Resurrection Remix ROM is the most customizable ROM you will ever find. While it offers a ton of features, it is not famous for its stability. However, It is stable enough to use it as your daily driver. RR has been based on LineageOS, SlimRoms, OmniRoms and original Remix ROM builds, this creates an awesome combination of performance, customization, power and the most new features.
4. AOSP Extended
As you can guess from its name, AOSP Extended is based on the Android Open Source Project. The custom ROM not only looks sleek and modern, but also provides a smooth user experience and great performance. AOSP Extended is commonly known as AEX Rom. AEX is an AOSP based ROM which provides stock UI with various customization features along with the Substratum theme engine. The project has been made by adding various useful features from various other projects into a stable AOSP Rom. Being based on AOSP it provides a smooth and lag-free experience along with great battery life.
5. Paranoid Android
Paranoid Android is one of the oldest custom ROMs and is a popular alternative to CyanogenMod/LineageOS Roms. It is one of my personal favorites Roms of all time. This Rom offers a customized and refined experience of a AOSP Rom. Although does not have a lot of customization options available but also has some features which google later adopted on its later versions of Android. Ambient Display was first available on Paranoid Android. It also has some unique features like Hover mode and Pie which is a customized navigation bar.
6. Dirty Unicorns
Dirty Unicorns is a AOSP based Rom with a primary focus on customization without losing the stability of the Rom. As many customizable faetures it brings, it does not lag stability and offers a great battery life too. DU can be called as a stable version of Resurrection Remix because DU writes their code from a scratch. Whereas, Resurrection Remix just adds their code to the source code. Also the developers of DU developed this Rom as a hobby and not to make money (and also they do not accept donations!). Check out their official website here.
This Rom is an aftermarket firmware for android devices and comes pre installed in Xiaomi Android devices. MIUI stands for MI User Interface. However, it is not your regular android Rom, as it is a heavily themed Android Rom which is made to look like an iOS Interface. This Rom is great for people who like iOS UI but also like android features. It a feature rich Rom and is not restricted to Xiaomi devices only, thanks to the developers all around the world.
8. Bootleggers Rom
Bootleggers ROM is an aftermarket firmware based on Ground Zero Open Source Project (GZOSP) and brings custom features with the most useful apps on your device, with the goal of “Making you feel like 家(means home or family)”.
Using the stability and compatibility of GZOSP, this ROM is also packed with some custom wallpaper, ringtones, and fonts, to bring to your device into a more fresh look, also with a selection of apps, header packs and wallpapers. However, It is a great mix of Customization and Stability and ideal to be used as a daily driver.
9. Viper OS
ViperOS is an another AOSP based Rom which provides you a perfect balance between Stability, Battery life and Customization. However, It is possible that you might not have heard of this project as it is comparatively new. With some time in development, This Rom might be a big name in field of Custom Roms next. It does not have a lot of customization features, but the most used customization features are present in this Rom. Hence this Rom is ideal for you to use it as a daily driver.
10. Havoc OS
It is yet another a new project comparatively to the customs Rom’s world and has made quite a hype due to the customization it offers. Besides Ressurection Remix, HavocOS might be the most customization offering Rom. this Rom based on AOSP project and provides heavy customization to the users. As customization takes away the stability of a Rom, This Rom might not be a Stability oriented Rom but the Rom looks quite Aesthetic.
